Last weekend, some friends joined me to explore Alberta. Our first stop is the abandoned airfield at Thunderlake. GPS N 52 50, W 116 43.
It was a round trip of 495 Nautical miles.
From Thunderlake, we followed a canyon into the rocky mountains, then turning north and flying over Maligne Lake.
We flew over Jasper and landed at Hinton Entrance airfield, another grass airstrip. Then went to Whitecourt for a touch-and-go. Then we found and flew over a grass airfield at Bruderheim that isn’t listed in the CFS (but is listed by Aviation Alberta). Then back to Camrose.
While at Thunderlake airfield, we walked to the river to possibly try fishing, but the final steepness to riverbank was too steep.
And at Hinton Entrance airfield, we walked to possibly fish in the Athabasca river, but declined to go down a steep cliff to get there.
One mystery.. as we flew past the town of Legal, Alberta, I’m sure I saw an airfield, but nothing is listed on my maps. I’ll want to return someday and check it out more closely.
